clive thompson’s got a fascinating rumination on what a revelation about the configuration of the humboldt squid’s razor-sharp beak means proper for materials science: there are many outlandish things about the giant humboldt squid, but here’s in unison of the strangest: its beak. the squid’s beak is a specific of the hardest organic substances in existence ? such that the sharp point can slice through a fish or whale like a ginsu knife. yet the beak is attached to squid flesh that itself is the texture of jello. how precisely does a gelatinous animal safely employ such a razor-sharp weapon? why doesn’t it just fair of, y’know, rip below par? it’s as if you tried to fashion a roast with a pierce that doesn’t participate in a oversee: it would cut into your fingers as much as the roast. this question has haunted sundry a pelagic biologist. so recently a team of materials scientists at the university of california decided to carefully interrogate the physical properties of the beak. their detection? the beak contains a huge gradation of stiffness: the advice of the beak is 100 times more rigid than the base of the beak ? so the base can blend easily with the surrounding flesh. not make sense is the key to the proper functioning of this gradient: if the beak is dried unconscious, the soft base calcifies until it’s nearly as dense and rigid as the peak. John McCain in the spotlight: Can he outshine Sarah Palin?

With his pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate, John McCain unquestionably shored up his standing with the Republican base — any doubt about that was removed by the unbridled enthusiasm she sparked among GOP conventioneers Wednesday night.

Now, McCain faces a new challenge: Delivering a nomination acceptance speech this evening that generates as much buzz as Palin’s did.

He will benefit from low expectations; traditional oratory never has been his forte. And the set at the convention hall in St.Paul is being redesigned to simulate the town-hall milieu in which he is more comfortable.

McCain takes center stage shortly after 10 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. PDT), following the showing of a video about him.

Pilot Sues To Get Off Terrorist List, Says Career Is At Stake

A Pennsylvania Gulf War veteran says he has just 11 days to get off a terrorism watch list in order to keep his job as a commercial pilot and filed suit in federal court Tuesday hoping to have a judge immediately order Homeland Security to clear his name.

Erich Scherfen, a former military pilot and a convert to Islam, charges that the government placed him and his wife Rubeena Tareen, a Pakistani-born U.S. citizen, on a terrorist watch list because of their religion.

Scherfen may be in luck since he filed his suit the same day that a federal appeals court ruled that individuals on the list could sue to get out of the database in a normal court — despite the fact that Congress largely exempts the Transportation Security Administration’s actions from lawsuits in federal court.

On April 29, 2008, Scherfen’s employer Colgan Airlines suspended him from flying after a positive match on a Transportation Security Administration list, according to the suit filed in Pennsylvania Middle U.S. District Court.

While Scherfen was on paid leave, the couple applied for help through the Homeland Security’s Traveler Redress Inquiry Progam but could not even get a tracking number to follow the case, the complaint alleges. Joe Williams, a spokesman for Pinnacle Airlines, which owns Colgan, said only “We can not comment on his status.”

Scherfen has until the end of the month to get back into good graces of the database or else he will continue to be a”pilot who is not allowed to fly,” according to the suit (.pdf).

Although their experiences indicate they are on a federal government “watch list,” the government now will not acknowledge their listing. The electronic system that was purportedly set up to address errors on teh watch list does not work— in fact, it appears to be a black hole, with citizen complaints going in but without any resolution coming back out. For Plaintiffs, the entire experience has been surreal. What is very real, however, is the harm that they have suffered and will continue to suffer, including the imminent loss of Mr. Scherfern’s ability to continue in his profession as commercial pilot.

Scherfen and his wife say thay have been questioned and detained at airports repeatedly and that the government’s failure to provide a “name-clearing hearing” violates their due process rights. They also say that putting them on a watch list because of their religious beliefs violates the First Amendment.

A TSA spokeswoman declined to comment on pending litigation, referring Threat Level to the Justice Department. DOJ spokesman Charles Miller said the government had not yet been served with the suit, but once they are, the government will make a determination on how to respond in court.

As for a response out of court — perhaps by expediting a review of the couple’s case? Miller says he can’t speak on behalf of Homeland Security.

UPDATE: The Terrorist Screening Center says its database includes some 400,000 distinct individuals, but more records than that due to alias. 95 percent are foreigners, leaving approximately 20,000 Americans in the terrorist watch list.

The TSA says uses only 50,000 of those people are on its two lists: the No-Fly and Selectee list. The former means no boarding pass, the latter extra screening and no home check-in ever.

The government also says the watch lists are useful.

Fantasy Football Strategy - Drafting Wide Receivers Late

Eric’s post from yesterday has me thinking about wide receivers. He drafted a team that is weak on WRs in a league that starts 3 WRs and he’s wondering if he’s doomed before the season has started. My answer: no freaking way.

It’s far easier to find wide receivers late in the draft – or on the waiver wire — than it is to find running backs. In fact, it’s a lot easier than people realize. I usually go weak on WRs because I know it’s possible to grab them later.

I reviewed last season’s Top 20 wide receivers in Receiving Yards and checked to see where they were drafted. I didn’t have average draft position info from last year, so I used the draft results of last year’s SBNation Bloggers Fantasy Football League. That’s as close to a group of football experts as you’ll find anywhere. Also, I realize that receiving yards isn’t the perfect way to rank fantasy WRs, but it’s easy to work with.

Out of the Top 20 WRs, nine of them (45%) were drafted in Round 7 or later. In fact, three of them weren’t drafted at all.

Notice that I said it’s possible to grab them later, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do it. For every owner who scored by grabbing Roddy White or Bobby Engram late, there’s an owner who flamed out by grabbing Michael Jenkins or Deion Branch late.

It’s tough, but it can certainly be done — nearly half of the Top 20 WRs from last year were available if you knew who to look for. If you find Brady or Manning drops into your lap in the 2nd round and then realize you need a RB2 in the 3rd.. don’t worry. If you’re prepared and smart (and a little lucky) you can grab great WRs late in your draft.
